i like to hang on to my old technology. we still listen to story tapes, and mix tapes (we have a tape player in the 'burb and both the kids rooms). i have some old video copies i made of the martha stewart show (more than 10 years ago) in categories like 'christmas'. my kids love to play them and watch every christmas as she builds a gingerbread house or decorates cookies. it sure beats today when i thought it would be fun to see her show as it actually aired. until she started talking with some director about some movie where the star has an affair with her ex-husband...i ran to the tv and turned it off, but not before the girls were shocked. i was so disappointed!
anyway, for many years i've had these cassette tapes of my mom's old christmas records. she used to play them in the mornings to wake us up. the chipmunks, nat king cole, andy williams. such great music. i have some of them in itunes and some on cds too but they are not the same. and this year, when i unpacked the christmas stuff, there were no tapes to be found, except ivan rebroff.
i thought it would be ok, until tonight when we were all driving home from a christmas party. we were trying to remember the chipmunks song where dave says, 'why don't we open a few presents while we're waiting for the next chorus?' and then theodore says, 'oh boy, a surf-board!' then simon 'i got an encyclopedia set dave!' and then the yelling starts because alvin got himself a harmonica....and dave yells 'get rid of it and sing!' and alvin says, 'OK!'.......and they start singing but no one could remember what song! oh! it was just killing me! i can't relate the happy childhood christmas feelings i get from that song and it was just miserable.
i suppose it is time to track down some 21st century copies of those ancient recordings. but i really want the record crackling in the background.
