2 am

a little noise, a little whimper, and he's sitting up in his crib. swaying a little with sleepiness but feeling unsettled. i wait, holding my breath, until he whimpers and talks again. feeling my way in the dark i creep across the 4 feet or so between our beds and feel for his warm body. he turns to me and i lift him and nestle him into my neck, feeling his silky little curls against my cheek. his tiny arms go around my shoulders and i hold him close, rocking and humming. i can feel his comfort and as he relaxes against me, drifting back into sleep, i bless this sleepy moment. how much he has changed in a year! how short are the nights when i can hold him this way! i run my hands over his tiny, bumpy backbone and his chubby legs which are thinner every day. he's on his way to two years old and i feel that it has flown. when i finally lay him back in his crib and climb back into my bed i know these nights will soon be over, and i will be grateful for uninterrupted sleep. i only hope i can remember and feel these moments when they are gone.
