sundays

i wish sundays were an island of peace in a busy week! since it is the only day we homeschoolers must leave the house at a specific time, it's quite a trick to get everyone dressed and ready and out the door in time for church. inevitably there is some variety of clothing-related meltdown, or maybe hair-related, something important is lost or forgotten, and somehow mom hardly ever eats breakfast. when we get to church, i am always surprised by boy #1's footwear. somehow i haven't learned to check that and, as he hates uncomfortable shoes, we get some fascinating choices. (imaginary photo here of beat-up hand-me-down flaming vans).
at church there is the fun of loudly noticing friends and gesticulating wildly to be sure they notice us. since we are usually late, that is never a problem. as mom and dad try to absorb something of the service, there are repeated requests to 'draw me a racecar daddy', 'can i have a mint?', sneaking fun toys out that weren't supposed to leave the house, and grunting yells from baby for attention.
but in the few moments of peace, i feel a deep, blossoming rightness. my children and my husband are with me in a place of beautiful tranquility and inspiration. though i often feel that i haven't been able to hear much of sacrament meeting, i feel blessed by my efforts and even sometimes, the spirit of God touches my soul and i know that He is pleased with my efforts.
