my book club (i think it's been 11 years...)
we've been meeting 10 times a year and many faces have changed. there are many books i would have never picked up or even heard of that i tried and enjoyed. and also, many i disliked.

today i checked good reads and saw this:

what a relief! and i'm so glad she's my friend and i can see what she's been reading. there's no more luxurious feeling than having a new book that i think will be a good one and having time to read it. unless it's having a nice big brownie at the same time.

this is Dad...no that is NOT his security blanket. [cue Vince Guaraldi].
Mom is doing fine and the other kids were all having a grand ol' time at a friend's house.

They will be SO excited to say hello to their new baby brother in the morning.

some things i like to look at

the litigator went to see avatar tonight with his buddy, our brother-in-law and i could be a teensy bit jealous. my good wife and bad wife tendencies warred...tell him you want to see it too! no, let him have his guy time. but what if it's a really good movie and i miss all the fun? you know you like it better when you can snuggle up on the couch and get something useful done at the same time. the good wife won. yay for her. now i am surfing blogs i like but never look at (when i'm sposed to be planning homeschool stuff) and i came across the most hilarious idea and photographs. 'jowling' is not a term i've heard before but it is cracking me up! and sheesh these people are so un-vain to post these pictures for all the world to see! (from one of those photography blogs i love, 'the image is found').

10 things i love: my kitchen

inspired by this post, i'd like to record for posterity.

1. anthropologie latte bowls. we use them for everything. i leave them out on the counter because they make me happy. (the tiny ones are extra special. we use them for ice cream toppings or tiny servings of pudding)

2. mom's kitchenaid. not sure how old this is, but i used to bake cakes for my brothers with it when i was a young lass.

3. the litigators new knife. so sharp. so pretty.

4. kids' silverware. they all have their own set in a favorite color, so there's no arguing.

5. divided lunch trays from the dollar store. they turn any food into an event.

6. our table. first furniture we bought as a married couple, thinking ahead to life with a family. there is always something spread out here. it is aging gracefully.

7. electric skillet. not pretty, but worth its storage space. we use it almost daily for grilled cheese, quesadillas, pancakes, even crayon art.

8. crate and barrel nesting bowls. we fill them with fruit or buffet foods.

9. tupperware we splurged on in our first married year. how many times they have saved us from pantry pests, i couldn't count. and i like how they look neat and tidy with their labels. (not entirely ridiculous since i have several young bakers).

10. window to the side yard. there's not much to see, 

but every day i am grateful for the sunlight it sheds into my kitchen. 

 

if i hadn't done this little exercise i would never have noticed how many of the things that make me happy are colorful! it's nice to know myself a little better now.

i should have majored in graphic design

i am in love with fonts. i have always loved hand-lettering, and from the days of our first computer (1996?) i have collected fonts. i am very particular about what font i use for anything i print. in fact, that is one of my pet peeves about blogger, that there isn't an easy way to add different fonts.

i love the beautiful flowing lines and changing layers of color

'Working with a razor blade on wood panels painted with dark grey ink and pigment, Puckette covers the surface with an elaborate thicket of loops and spirals. The white line is not applied but revealed; the black ink is etched away with the razor blade to expose the white gesso below. The ink wash background is of a varied density; the black field may be traversed by vertical or horizontal striations. Her calligraphic markings seem to be floating in a shallow atmospheric space.'

since it has been a while between regular postings i keep thinking of things that i want to memorialize.

item 1. favorite shoes. they're plum.

item 2. first hair cut

item 3. flourless cake that really grew. it was just right.

item 4. even after haircut, plenty for sisters to play with.

6. bad books

being a lover of jane austen i am occasionally drawn into books that would be better left unopened. be wary.

this has been one of my favorite songs since high school. the old-school repartee makes it even better.
